Cool Carpet™: Australia’s only Carbon Neutral Carpet Tiles
"Carbon neutral" is a term that has come to be used so extensively and in so many different contexts that its meaning has become somewhat obscured. Defining it as something that releases no carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is too simple a definition. It is possible to release CO2 into the atmosphere and still be carbon neutral, as long as the emissions are balanced by a CO2 reduction elsewhere – in other words, as long as the net effect is zero.
What Carbon Neutral Means to Interface
Mission Zero® is our promise to eliminate any negative impact our company may have on the environment by 2020. As part of this promise, we are striving to become a carbon neutral company.
Being carbon neutral means using life cycle assessment LCA) to understand the entire carbon footprint of our carpet tiles - from raw material extraction, through to manufacturing, transport and even the cleaning associated with the life of the product after it’s installed.
We achieve carbon neutral status by measuring our carbon footprint, reducing our emissions where possible, and offsetting those we can't reduce. By doing so, we produce Australia’s only 100% carbon neutral carpet.
100% Carbon Neutral: Our Progress
Hundreds of companies and organisations have joined the carbon-neutral movement but Interface started early. In 2004, we launched the first carbon neutral program in Australia, Cool Carpet™.
Since then, more than 13 million square metres of Cool Carpet™ have been sold, and more than 224,00 tonnes of verified emission reduction credits have been purchased and retired.
Our Mission Zero™ goal of eliminating our negative impact on the environment drives us towards finding new and innovative ways to reduce our footprint. We also assess our supply chain and work with our suppliers to become more efficient to reduce our collective emissions.
