Close The Loop
Go Full Circle
We'd like to get to get to the point where we never take another drop of oil from the earth by utilising the natural cycle and redesigning processes and products to close the technical loop. Our aim is to create cyclical systems in which the waste from one process or product is "food" for another, preserving the natural, living systems of our Earth.
Our current targets:
- Reduce the use of petroleum-based raw materials.
- Use recovered materials or natural materials as "feedstock" for manufacturing.
As we move towards this goal, we are reducing our use of virgin raw materials and working to get the most value from the materials we employ. Following are some of the advancements we've made in the Natural Cycle and the Technical Cycle.
Natural Cycle: Bio-Based Products
- We were the first carpet manufacturer to use fibres made from polylactic acid (PLA), a commercially viable plastic made from corn starch. InterfaceFLOR Hybrid yarn, a nylon/bio-based blend, is currently being used in the face cloth of select products.
Technical Cycle: Reducing the Use of Petroleum-Based Materials
- GlasBac®RE, our recycled backing system harvests reclaimed vinyl modular carpet (even our competitors') and recycles it into new GlasBac®RE backing.
- GlasBac®RE contains an average of up to 49% total recycled content and many of our products utilise yarns with recycled content, moving us further away from using virgin materials.
- With InterfaceFLOR’s ReEntry® program customers are able to recycle their vinyl backed carpet easily and efficiently, closing the product lifecycle loop. Since the programs' inception in 1995, ReEntry has diverted globally, more than 30 million kilograms of carpet from landfills.
- InterfaceFLOR in the US has earned Scientific Certification Systems' (SCS) Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) Certification for all i2™ products and all products specified with GlasBac®RE.
